Hanya istilah-istilah yang dituturkan oleh responden sahaja dianalisis oleh pengkaji. Antara aspek penting yang mendasari kajian ini ialah usaha mengumpul dan merakamkan semua istilah yang terdapat dalam seni pembuatan wau di Kedah. Setelah itu, kajian ini membina dan menghuraikan peta konsep berdasarkan data yang diperolehi daripada kajian lapangan yang telah dilakukan. Selain itu, proses mentakrifkan istilah berdasarkan peta konsep turut diutamakan. Kajian ini juga turut menganalisis proses pembentukan natif dalam istilah bahasa Melayu. Kajian ini membawa satu perubahan atau maklumat baru yang berkaitan dengan bidang peristilahan terutama dari segi budaya. Dapatan kajian ini mendapati bahawa kebanyakan istilah yang terdapat dalam bidang seni pembuatan wau merupakan hasil pembentukan natif dalam bahasa Melayu sendiri. Namun begitu, istilah-istilah ini turut mengalami proses peminjaman istilah asing mahupun dialek. Antara ciri-ciri takrif yang paling dominan dalam kajian ini ialah takrif jenis fungsional. Pengkajian mengenai sesuatu bahasa sering dilakukan oleh pengkaji-pengkaji terdahulu terutama yang merujuk kepada aspek dialektologi.
