Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji keinginan watak dalam novel-novel terpilih daripada karya Shahnon Ahmad, Azizi Haji Abdullah dan Anwar Ridhwan. Kajian ini dilakukan terhadap dua buah novel daripada setiap pengarang. Jumlah novel yang dianalisis dalam kajian ini adalah sebanyak enam buah novel. Novel-novel Shahnom Ahmad yang dianalisis ialah Ranjau Sepanjang Jalan (1966) dan Srengenge (1973). Karya-karya Azizi Haji Abdullah yang digunakan dalam kajian ini ialah harga Sebuah Maruah (2007) dan Seorang Tua di Kaki Gunung (1982). Manakala novel-novel Anwar Ridhwan pula ialah Hari-hari Terakhir Seorang Seniman (1979) dan Penyeberang Sempadan (2012). Kajian ini diharapkan dapat memenuhi objektif-objektif berikut. 1. Mengenal pasti asal-usul keinginan watak dalam novel-novel terpilih berdasarkan Teori Psikoanalisis Lacan. 2. Menganalisis tahap kebangkitan keinginan watak dalam novel-novel terpilih menggunakan Teori Psikonalisis Lacan. 3. Merumuskan hasil keinginan watak dalam novel-novel terpilih dari perspektif Psikianalisis Lacan. Pada akhirnya, semua analisis tesis ini akan membuktikan dua cadangan terkenal Lacan, iaitu cadangan pertamanya ialah ‘’Ketidaksedaran adalah wacana yang Lain.’’ Dan cadangan keduanya pula ialah ‘’Keinginan manusia adalah keinginan yang Lain.’’ Menurut Lacan. Keinginan manusia berasal dari yang Lain, dan ketidaksedaran manusia terbentuk di bawah pengaruh yang Lain. Tiga peringkat keinginan yang ingin dianalisis dalam kajian ini, iaitu asal-usul keinginan, kebangkitan, keinginan, dan hasil keinginan, akan menjadi proses melihat sifat keinginan watak-watak terpilih. Selain itu, kajian ini turut memasukkan pandangan-pandangan daripada ahli psikoanalisis lain atau bidang lain seperti linguistik, antropologi, ideologi, dan falsafah bagi menganalisis keinginan watak yang mempunyai ciri-ciri yang berbeza. Oleh itu, kajian akan menyatakan tafsiran baru analisis keinginan berbeza daripada kajian lepas. Melalui analisis keinginan watak ini, cadangan pertama Lacan terbukti bahawa ketidaksedaran watak tercipta di bawah pengaruh wacana yang Lain. Selain itu, cadangan kedua Lacan telah terbukti bahawa keinginan watak-watak yang terpilih dicipta oleh menginginkan keinginan yang Lain. Kajian ini merupakan kajian pertama dalam kesusasteraan Melayu yang menggunakan Teori Lacan. Melalui kajian ini, diharapkan agar hasil kajian ini dapat digunakan dan dimanfaatkan oleh pengkaji-pengkaji yang akan datang yang berminat untuk mengkaji karya-karya sastera Melayu menggunakan Teori Lacan.
