Kajian dilakukan dengan membandingkan 50 istilah yang terdapat dalam buku istilah Fizik, Hisab dan Kimia (IFHK, 1968) dengan istilah yang terdapat dalam buku istilah Matematik untuk Sekolah-sekolah Malaysia (IMSSM, 2003). Istilah yang berubah kemudian dianalisis denga menggunakan kaedah analisis komponen makna. Seterusnya, kajian lapangan dilakukan dengan menggunakan instrumen soal selidik untuk melihat penerimaan penggunaan terhadap istilah tersebut. Sejumlah 122 responden dilibatkan dalam kajian yang terdiri daripada 109 tenaga pengajar, 7 pegawai kementerian, dan 6 editor. Selain itu, sikap penggubal istilah dilihat berdasarkan istilah yang dicipta oleh mereka.
