"All current theories of phonology assume the correctness and adequacy of the syllable as a unit of hierarchical structure. Within these theories the syllable constitutes the lowest unit within a prosodic hierarchy which includes at progressively higher levels the foot, the phonological word, and the phonological phrase (cf. Selkirk 1980, Pike 1967)."
