Abstrak

Ever since the rise of Islam in Malaysia many mosques of various architectural forms, and styles from vernacular to colonial, traditional Middle Eastern and modern with varieties of interior designs from austere and plain to highly decorated and eclectic rectangle and square spaces rooted in many cultural and ethnic groups, have been erected to serve the Muslim community and to create an Islamic architecture identity. Heavy rainfall and high rate of humidity; varying ethnic groups; and the migration of different nations including Indians, Middle Eastern, Arabs, and the Westerns to the region have left their inevitable marks on the architecture and the interior design of mosques in Malaysia throughout her history. The aim of this research is to establish an understanding of mosque interior design evolution process from the earliest stage of its appearance in the form of vernacular mosque to the present status as the in Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan which is a true eclectic example of the latest Islamic architectural marvel in Malaysia. In order for us to get a glimpse of this process a background and the effect of local pre-Islamic designs, the history of Islam in the region, geographical, socio-cultural, and even the political factors that have influenced the scope of the usage of the Islamic art and architectonic elements to accomplish the interior designs of the mosques in Malaysia will be reviewed. In the end the interior design of the Masjid Wilayah Persckutuan will be examined and analyzed for its relationship with the Islamic art and architectonic concepts of vermacular mosques and other genres as well as its adaptability with the cultural and the climatic condition of the region.
