Tarian kontemporari merupakan sejenis bentuk atau gaya tari yang baru atau "terkini". Tarian kontemporari mencerminkan atau menggambarkan perasaan dan emosi sesuatu masyarakat pada zaman terserbut. Genre ini mengalakkan penerokaan pergerakan secara individu atau berkumpulan dan tidak mempunyai had limitasi. Tarian kontemporari telah bermula di Amerika Syarikat di sekitaran tahun 1920-andan tersebar ke seluruh dunia termasuk negara Malaysia. Tarian kontemporari juga dikenali sebagai tarian moden di Amerika Syarikatdan sesetengah negara-negara lain. la merupakan genre yang berkembang dengan paling cepat dan dinamik. Genre kontemporari berbeza di setiap negara. Sungguhpun demikian, genre ini tetap menunjukkan apa yang diingini oleh masyarakat kontemporari pada masa tersebut. Gaya tari baru ini telah diperkenalkan di Malaysia pada tahun 1960 an dan telah berkembang dengan pesatnya sehinggalah kini. Tarian kontemporari di Malaysia boleh dibahagikan kepada dua kategori iaitu kontemporari tradisional dan kontemporari moden. Tarian kontemporari tradisional menggunakan unsur-unsur daripada tarian Melayu dan mengubahsuaikannya serta menyusun semula corak tarian tersebut berasaskan kepada daya kreativiti koreografer. Tarian kontemporari moden pula, menonjolkan kemunculan beberapa koreografer yang berpendidikan barat, berpengetahuan luas dan dinamik. </text>
