Abstract

The nobat is the ensemble of the Malaysian sultanate. This thesis focuses on the ensemble in the northern state of Kedah. Today , the Malay Peninsula is the only region in the Isl amic world where this ensemble may sti11 be found. The nobat and its performance mark all royal occasions in Malaysia. In particular, in a language area where "being crowned" is substituted by "being drummed into kingship," dinobatkan, the Malay monarch is understood to be installed "by way of the nobat." Malay historiography declares that a monarch is not legitimate until enthroned by the nobat, after which he then rules
