Abstrak

In this study, six syntact ic categories in English were selected. This selection was based on contrast ive analysis and on the assumpt ion that there would be some difficulties in translating those selected synt actËc structures into Indonesian. The data analyzed showed that the translators often did translate according to nom expectations besides using other translation strategies in their work. Perhaps these are the strategies that could be termed preferred translations by individual translators ment ioned above. The find ings did confirm the investigator ls expectat ion that there would be difficulties in translating the selected syntactic structures in English. lHowever, the diffiicult ics werc not that the resulting translat ions were unacceptable, but rather that there was difficulty in making generalizat ions of the patterns of the preferred translations or translators' choices.
