Chapter I deals with the background of the development of Malay nationalism up to 1957. There are two aspects to this background. The first is with regard to the stages of the development that is influenced by political, social and economic factors. The second is with regard to role of the religious group, Malay school teachers and the journalists that became the main activists. Chapter II discusses the emergence of the nationalistic theme that was based on the stages of the development of the nationalism. After that the discussion was directed to the modern Malay poetry within the period of 1933-1957 as the main area of study.
