  Wayang kulit Rengit yang dibincangkan adalah hasil penelitian Muhamat Alip Jasnuri pada tahun 1980-an di Kampung Perepat, Mukim XI, Rengit, Batu Pahat, Johor. Kampung ini terletak kira-kira 25 kilometer dari Batu Pahat dan 7 kilometer dari Pekan Rengit. Kampung ini menjadi tumpuan kerana aktiviti seninya yang aktif. Penelitian ini menumpukan kepada bentuk cerita yang disampaikan oleh Dalang dan melihat kesamaan serta kelainan dari versi asal, serta pengertian di sebalik pagelaran tersebut. Kawasan kajian ini menarik kerana penduduknya kebanyakannya generasi kedua dari Jawa, terutama dari daerah Ponorogo di Jawa Timur, yang terkenal dengan kesenian reyog. Masyarakat keturunan Jawa ini membawa bersama kesenian warisan seperti kuda kepang, barongan, dan ludin.
