  The resurgence of Islamic fundamentalism and its implication to the Western world

  This paper discusses the growing Western interest in Islam and the causes that lead to the interest. It elaborates on the meaning of the terms Islamic resurgence, Islamic fundamentalism and its differences with the term Islamic militancy with explanation on the manifestations of the resurgence.
  
  Islamic history from the seventh century to the nineteenth century is explained, for the readers to appreciate and understand the rise and fall of the Islamic Empires and its causes. Responses by the muslims towards colonialism that followed after the downfall of the Ottoman Empire and how the responses lead to rhe emergence of Islamic movements is also highlighted.
  
  The paper then discusses in detail the early resurgence. Syed Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, Muhamad Abduh in Egypt and Sir Muhammad Iqbal in the Indian subcontinent were a few names that were mentioned as the early reformers of Islam. It also elaborates on the formation and influence of the Muslim Brotherhood founded by Hassan al-Banna and Jamaat-i-Islami founded by Abul Ala Mawdudi. It goes on to elaborate on the end of colonial rule and domination in muslim countries and the paths taken by these countries in nation building in the post-colonial era. The realization of the ineffectiveness of Western ideologies and systems in the sixties and seventies was the turning point for the resurgence. The resurgence then escalates with the Iranian Revolution.
