Description

Ophiocordyceps, a tropical fungus, infects the central nerve systems of ants. It has complete control over the host's movements after nine days in the body of an insect. It causes the ant to climb trees, convulse, and fall into the cool, wet earth below, where fungi thrive, according to National Geographic. When the fungus arrives, it waits until exactly solar noon to force the ant to bite a leaf and die.
