"The Semelai are allowed to have more than one wife, but this is most unusual and it is difficult to find any instances of a polygynous marriage. Economic reasons are often advanced for this, but in addition public opinion is not in favour of a man having more than one wife. Semelai marriages are generally stable and divorce is both unpopular and more difficult to obtain than is the case among most other Orang Asli tribes."
