"On the whole the government's economic programs both inside and outside of regroupment schemes have failed to benefit Orang Asli. Most Orang Asli are actually worse off now than they were before the government began its efforts to "develop" their economies. JHEOA Director-General Hassan Ishak concedes that Orang Asli are the poorest Malaysians, making about M$2100 (US$830) annually by government estimates (as opposed to the average income of M$7600)."
