"In ths regard, the 1961 Policy Statement was perhaps the most important document pertaining to Orang Asli development insofar as it accorded the Orang Asli some recognition of their rights as an indigenous people. It clearly spelt out several affirmative actions that needed to be implemented if the Orang Asli were to be "allowed to benefit on an equal footing from the rights and opportunities which the law grants to the other sections of the community" (JHEOA 1961: 2)."
