Abstrak

This research is to determine the presence of Islamic influence on traditional batik sarong Kelantan and Terengganu. The research is intended to find out if there is any significant Islamic influence portrayed on the use of certain design structure, dimensions, design motifs, design principle, choice of colors and the application of batik sarong. Chapter one begins with the introduction, which provides the significance of the study, statement of the problem, delimitation, limitations and research methodology, interview and observation studies of the traditional batik sarong Kelantan and Terengganu found in Museum and also from personel collection of batik-maker. Chapter two concentrates on related research and literature pertaining to the definition of sarong batik. It also provides a brief history on a general overview of batik from Kelantan and Terengganu, applications of sarong, its designs and Islamic influences. Chapter three describes the theoretical background that relate to the formal analysis of batik sarong Kelantan and Terengganu. The Islamic influence is shown in this analysis with the detail drawings and illustrations. This chapter also showed the process and appreciation of batik sarong based on the method designed by Ismail al Faruqi that is imitation, denaturalization, stylization and abstration. Chapter four deals with the analysis on the shape and general structure of batik sarong. The study was based on the research done by Harmen C. Veldhuisen, Abdul Aziz Abdul Rashid, Azah Aziz and the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation. The structures and measurements of the batik sarongs from Kelantan and Terengganu are shown in this chapter. Chapter five explain the term of motif and the identification of the type of motifs used in the batik sarong from Kelantan and Terengganu. Also provides analysis of Islamic influences are shown in the analysis of motif on every structure for determine Islamic influence from samples collected. Brief history on the colours of sarong batik and their significance is discussed in chapter six. The concept of colour and beauty in Islam plays a significance role in the development of batik sarong Kelantan and Terengganu, thus confirming to the question of identity in the development of Islamic esthetic, as whole. The following chapter seven further describes the general influence of Islam on the development of the art of:batik sarong. The influences of Islam can be see in the motifs and design of batik sarongs from Kelantan and Terengganu. In conclusion, the study on batik sarong Kelantan and Terengganu shows that there is concrete applications of the ideas and interpretation of Islamic influence on batik sarong Kelantan and Terengganu.
