  This thesis is a case study on the cultural system of the Ba,jaus of Omadal Island, Semporna, Sabah. The study focuses on the kinship system, stages in the life -cycle of an individual : pregnancy-birth, marriage and death, and the belief system. A brief account of the ethnic background of Sabah, with special emphasis on the Bajaus, is given in Chapter I, and this is follow ed by an account of the social, dem ographic, econ omic and histori cal background of the place of study in Chapter II. This back ground information is felt necessary for a fuller unde rstanding of the Bajaus and their way of life.
