"Hikayat Awang Sulong Merah Muda is an epic tale of a scion of an Orang Laut family who rose to become the Sultan of Semarang, Java through his marriage to a Javanese princess. This part of the tale may not have any historical truth, but what comes out of the story is the existence of Orang Asli communities throughout the west coast of the Malay Peninsula from Kedah right down to Johor. The whole story pictures each Orang Asli community in each place ruled by chiefs, known as Batin. None in the story bears a Muslim name, but in their invocations they use the name of Allah and verses from the Quran."
