"In December 1941 the Japanese invaded the Peninsula and occupied it until 1945. During that period most Orang Asli retreated into the forest and avoided contact with the outside world. They shared the forest with the Malayan Peoples Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA), a Communist-dominated guerrilla force that formed the only effective resistance to the Japanese occupiers. The MPAJA, mostly Chinese, received support from Chinese squatters and villagers, who the Japanese treated cruelly."
