"Over the last decade, the Department of Orang Asli Affairs (Jabatan Hal Ehwal Orang Asli) has shifted from the Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development to Culture and Tourism and now National Unity and Social Development, depending on political trends and national interest relating to the Orang Asli. Since independence in 1957, the Orang Asli has never been successfully identified to this department nor obtained direct channels of communication with relevant government officials within this department on their problems and interests. The policy of this department which is assimilation through Islamisation and mainstream development remains controversial."
