The role of religion in constructing an identity based onMalay Bumiputera (son of the soil) Muslims, as themajority group of the population, is a debatable discus-sion among Malaysians. Since its 1957 independence, thesupreme law of Malaysia, the Federal Constitution, haspronounced Islam as the ofﬁcial religion in the countryand the Yang Dipertuan Agong, King of Malaysia, as theHead of Islam. This provision also allows other religiousideologies to be practiced. Apart from the 1969 tragedy,Malaysian people happily live in harmonious and peace-ful multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious soci-eties while each ethnicity promotes its own culture,respects other diversities and cherishes differences topromote unity and avoid disunity
