Wayang Kulit merupakan satu bentuk seni persembahan Melayu tradisional yang diwarisi sejak zaman berzaman. Teater Wayang Kulit memaparkan pola kehidupan masyarakat Melayu lama dari segi kepercayaan, hubungan mereka dengan alam sekeliling, hubungan dengan raja dan hubungan sosialisasi dalam masyarakat. Mereka mempunyai hubungan erat dengan alam dan wujud interaksi yang baik dalam kehidupan seharian.

Dalam masyarakat Melayu, alam terbahagi kepada beberapa tahap seperti alam atas iaitu tempat tinggal dewa baik dan Mak Hyiang, Alam Tengah (alam kehidupan dan alam dalam badan manusia. Mereka mengeksploitasi sumber-sumber alam dengan percaturan-percaturan tertentu. Mereka percaya bahawa semua benda dan objek di alam ini mempunyai semangat dan roh. Ia terbahagi kepada dua semangat iaitu semangat baik dan jahat dan ibu segala semangat iaitu Mak Hyiang. Kepercayaan ini dikenali sebagai kepercayaan animisme. Mereka tidak akan mengkhianati objek-objek alam dengan sewenang-wenangnya. Sebaliknya mereka meminta izin terlebih dahulu. Makhluk-makhluk yang wujud di samping mereka itu dihormti, dipuja dan dijamu.

Alat-alat muzik dalam persembahan Wayang Kulit Kelantan

Dalam sinopsis ini, penulis cuba menganalisis persiapan, peranan, kedudukan dan alat-alat muzik di dalam persembahan Wayang Kulit Kelantan. Penulis telah membahagikan alat-alat muzik tradisional ini kepada beberapa kumpulan berdasarkan sistem klasifikasi Curt Hornbostel. Dalam kajian ini, ada lapan jenis alat muzik yang dibahagikan kepada empat kumpulan penting iaitu mambranophone, ideophone, chordophone dan aerophone. Penulis juga membincankan apakah peranan dan fungsi sebenar setiap alat muzik. Pembuatan, teknik permainan dan penjagaan alat muzik serta kedudukkan setiap alat muzik ketika persembahan turut dibincangkan. Pada bahagian penutup, penulis cuba membayangkan masa depan alat-alat muzik dan pemuziknya. Beberapa pandangan dan saranan telah dikemukakan bagi mempertahankan persembahan tradisional Melayu ini dari pupus ditelan arus pemodenan.

ASEAN : External security concerns in a post cold war era

From its modest beginnings in 1967, ASEAN has come to be regarded as one of the most successful experiments in regionalism in the developing world.

ASEAN region is generally rich in natural resources which includes petroleum and agriculture products as well as other important raw materials. It is also a diverse and vitally important region in the world. Geographically, it sits astride the world's major eastwest trade routes which connect the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. Regional stability and freedom of passage through the area is therefore critical to international trade.

ASEAN regional security is determined by both the external and internal threats as well as the interconnections between them. The realm of security in ASEAN involves a wide spectrum of affairs: geo=strategic; political; economic; social; cultural and ideological. It is not solely a military matter as it usually perceived in the conventional sense.

The resurgence of Islamic fundamentalism and its implication to the Western world

This paper discusses the growing Western interest in Islam and the causes that lead to the interest. It elaborates on the meaning of the terms Islamic resurgence, Islamic fundamentalism and its differences with the term Islamic militancy with explanation on the manifestations of the resurgence.

Islamic history from the seventh century to the nineteenth century is explained, for the readers to appreciate and understand the rise and fall of the Islamic Empires and its causes. Responses by the muslims towards colonialism that followed after the downfall of the Ottoman Empire and how the responses lead to rhe emergence of Islamic movements is also highlighted.

The paper then discusses in detail the early resurgence. Syed Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, Muhamad Abduh in Egypt and Sir Muhammad Iqbal in the Indian subcontinent were a few names that were mentioned as the early reformers of Islam. It also elaborates on the formation and influence of the Muslim Brotherhood founded by Hassan al-Banna and Jamaat-i-Islami founded by Abul Ala Mawdudi. It goes on to elaborate on the end of colonial rule and domination in muslim countries and the paths taken by these countries in nation building in the post-colonial era. The realization of the ineffectiveness of Western ideologies and systems in the sixties and seventies was the turning point for the resurgence. The resurgence then escalates with the Iranian Revolution.

Serunai : Peranan dalam persembahan Wayang Kulit Kelantan

Kajian ini tidak menjelaskan secara menyeluruh tentang persembahan Wayang Kulit (WK). Tumpuan khusus hanya diberikan terhadap peranan serunai dalam persembahan WK. Di negara ini terdapat pelbagai jenis WK yang ada sejarah perkembangannya tersendiri. Namun begitu, WK Siam menjadi tumpuan utama dalam kajian ini. Apa yang menarik dalam persembahan WK ini ialah peranan serunai yang begitu ketara. Serunai mempunyai sejarah perkembangannya yang tersendiri. Nama dan bentuk serunai tidak sama antara kawasan-kawasan ia ditemui. Namun begitu, peranan serunai tidak boleh diketepikan khususnya dalam persembahan WK. Dari awal pembukaan panggung serunai ditiup hinggalah sesuatu persembahan itu tamat. Contohnya serunai ditiup untuk mengiringi lagu-lagu yang dibawa oleh Tok Dalang (TD). Dalam hal seperti ini, serunai mempunyai peranan yang begitu banyak. Harus diingat untuk menghasilkan bunyi serunai yang betul-betul merdu perlu penjagaan rapi. Iaitu tidak mengabaikan pantang larang yang ditetapkan sejak zaman dahulu lagi. Tidak kurang penting juga cara serunai ditiup. Sememangnya cara tiupan yang sempurna akan menghasilkan bunyi yang benar-benar merdu. Sesungguhnya tidak lengkap sesuatu persembahan WK seandainya serunai tidak berfungsi dengan baik.

The resurgent of Islamic Fundamentalism : Its Implication to the Western world

Islam is the religion of truth. It is the embodiment of the code of life which God, the creator and the Lord of the universe has revealed for the guidance of mankind. Islam in an Arabic word and denotes submission, surrender and obedience. A religion Islam stands for complete submission and obedience to Allah. The other literal meaning of the word Islam is 'peace' and the signifies that one can achieve real peace of body and of mind only through submission and obedience to Allah.

The basic Islamic concept is that the entire universe was created by God, whom Islam calls Allah and who is the Lord and the sovereign of the universe. He is the Lord of the universe which He alone sustains. He created man and appointed for each human being a fixed period of life which he is to spend upon the earth.

The western generalisation of the issue when dealing with Islam is to a degree it leaves the impression that Islam is and should be always associated with violence and all muslims are fundamentalist in its negative meaning. Muslims and Christians in the past never really enjoyed a peaceful relationship beginning with the expansion of muslim empire and the conquest of Spain in the 7th century and later on by the Christian crusaders invading the muslim countries in the middle East. That has influenced the orientalists in their writings about muslims and Islam which widened the distance between the cultures.

Islam is indeed a misunderstood religion such as the misunderstanding and the prejudice against it that muslim and non-muslim alike often regard it as animpediment as a barrier to good peaceful relations between muslims and non-muslims and even between muslims and muslims. Both regard this religion that brought greatness tot he muslims and built a very progressive empire that dominated the world in terms of sciences, arts, technology, skills in exploration, navigation and in trade, industry, political strength and territorial size.

The Western media attempts to relate any of terrorism or sabotage to the muslims, especially Arabs and does not trouble itself to the simplest description of the atrocities commented by some countries or some individuals of those countries against the muslim. Therefore, everyone that profess the Islamic faith is fundamentalists.

There is a tricky and deliberate information policy which aims at the formulation of an international opinion that have a version towards Islam and muslims especially after the fall of the communist ideology which had been the first competitor to the West.

Justeru itu, TUDM telah mengambilkira pelbagai faktor utama di dalam permodenan dan penyusunan semula organisasinya sesuai dengan pembangunan negara masa kini.

The military as an integrating force in nation-building

The military is an instrument that plays important roles and functions both during war and in peace time. During war, the role of the military is clear; to defend against the enemy attack or to recapture fallen territory. In peace time, the military train for war and to create a picture that the potential enemy will have a second thought to attack the country it is serving. The latter role is not very clear to the general public or the politicians, as such misunderstanding exists among non-intellectuals as to the role the military plays in nation building. Is ensuring national security part of nation building? Does nation building and national security be planned and executed independantly?

Many scholars agree that security plays an important part in any nation's development process. Military is the force that can ensure security beside the police force and other agencies of the Home Affairs Ministry. Security will stabilise the country and subsequently nation building will come.

Presently all countries have some form of military forces to defend the nation-states. Defense of nation state is the subset of national security. From the security provided by the military, Malaysia has achieved enormous success, in terms of political stability, economic prosperity and social cohesion. Military will continue to provide service as long as it is needed so as to allow Malaysia to strive forward and achieve the vision of turning her into a developed nation. While it aspires to be a developed nation, Malaysia does not neglect the need for national security for it is the foundation on which peace and prosperity is built.
However, Malaysia's emphasis on deterrence through diplomacy though politically justified, did not by itself provide the means to guarantee national integrity and the preservation of its sovereignty. For deterrence to be credible, it must not only be seen in physical form but also in the sustained will, resilience of its people and the ability to mobilize in shortest possible time its economic, social, psychological and military power of nation to meet a threat.

Malaysia's foreign and defence policy (1957-1967)

The study of National Foreign Policies has maintained a sustained interest among the scholars of international relation even after some attention has shifted to the study on non-national and supra national actors. Despite the discipline's continued emphasis on foreign policy analysis, the policies of the third world countries have not received the attention commensurate with their growing importance in world politics.

Little had been written on Tunku Abdul Rahman and his Foreign Policies between the period of 1957 to 1967. However the Malaysian Foreign Policy during Tunku Abdul Rahman period can be understood in term of a decision making by the Prime Ministers himself and the few who were comprising on of five men and he rally discussed them with the cabinet. The five were Tun Abdul Razak, Tun Dr. Ismail, Tan Sri Ghazali Shafie, Tun Tan Siew Sin and Tun Sambanthan. Most of the consensus view which includes economic growth which act as a key to political stability, anti-communism, Anglophilia and support for International Organizations.

Tunku used to discuss with Tun Razak, Tun Dr. Ismail during the free time and during informal contacts. This had become the source of decision making during Tunku's time. Malaysian Foreign Policy at that particular time was pro-west. Political elite at that time was pro-west who were trained from the United Kingdom, and the British who were the one trained them and then the British handed over the country in 1957. The other strong indication was that the Malays was really a disciplined character who always obey orders either from their political leaders of the Malay Sultanate. The Malays was the most dominant group at that particular time who works as a peasant. Traditionally the Malays are very friendly to the British and other races. The Chinese was the immigrant from the China who came to work in the mining industry. The Indian was brought into Malaya because the mining industry really require them to work as workers. As they arrived, the plural society was arise.

After independence Malaya was having a friendly relation with the British. This is due to the Chinese who has the different lifestyles and attitude were among who were suspected to be friendly with the CPM who were getting the support from mainland of China. Realizing about the strategic importance the Malayan government had the negotiation with the British, New Zealand, Australia and Singapore to form up SEATO and later led to the formation of AMDA.
