"The main thrust of these recommendations is that Orang Asli want development and integration into mainstream society, but with their ethnic identities intact. In many ways the recommendations recall the Statement of Policy of 1961, which was abandoned in part after the government adopted the assimilation policy. These recommendations also echo those in the "Memorandum" that came from a conference of twenty-sever Orang Asli headmen from numerous groups in 1982 (Means 1985-1986:649-652; New Straits Times 1982a)."
