"So far we have been using the concepts of "Malayic" and "non-Malayic" in our reference to the Austronesian Orang Asli. The two concepts signal proximity and distance respectively between these speech systems and Malay. There is no definite percentage score in the cognates as a value in determining whether a particular language is Malayic or non-Malayic. The two terms came into being when linguists working on Austronesian languages encountered speech systems which are close to Malay, or sound almost like Malay, but are not dialects of Malay."
